When going into substance painter, I had a pretty clear idea as to how I wanted my robot to look. I imagined it to have been scruffy and the paint start to wear out in places. I also wanted to do an idea similar to C3-P0 in Star Wars where he has a red replaced arm.
I downloaded a range of metallic textures from SubstanceShare, finding a couple I liked on my robot. I chose to have a red "replaced" left leg, red and black buttons and silver "newly replaced" right hand and eyes to make my robot look more interesting and have more colour. I also chose to make the base colour of my robot a dark blue as I thought this contrasted well with the metal scraping though the paint. Another thing I added was normals. Normals are decals that create the illusion of depth and height to a model. Some of the normals I used was a hatch and air vents at the back, and screws.
I did have an issue however when putting my texture onto my robot in Maya as for some reason the metallic mask would make my robot black and the normal map would be to harsh. I tried editing this in Maya which worked to some extent, but once I rendered and lit my final animation, the textures had fixed itself and looked like how it did in substance painter.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with my textured robot as I feel it adds more character and looks like how I imagined my robot during the early stages of concepts at the start.
