Robot - Rendering

Updated: Feb 6, 2020

Rendering my robot took some time as i had a total of 270 frames of animation, but before I could render I had to set up my scene.

I started with adding in skydome lighting as this would be the best lighting option for this project. After this I started to run test renders so see how the final render would come out, changing the expose of the lighting and adjusting my texture. This ended up fixing the problem I previously had with the robot's texture which, when in Maya, the metallic texture would turn out extremely dark but this was due to the poor default lighting in Maya compared to Substance Painter. This explains why the texturing looks extremely harsh in the scene but in rendering test it's correct.

This was when I added shadows from my robot onto the floor and desk. This was done by adding a ShadowMatte material. This basically allows shadows to be projected onto objects such s the floor and desk, even if the objects themselves wont be rendered. Once I had finished some other small adjustments, it was time to render. As stated previously, this took some time but I had left it over night and when I came back the next day it had finished.

I brought this into After Effects along with the original video we shot of the classroom and layered them together. When I had done this I noticed a section of the desk which had been rendered. I simply fixed this however by placing a mask over the top of this section and key framing it as it slowly moves out of shot.

I ran into a few minor problems however in this final stage, one being that I didn't like was how reflective the keyboard's texture was in the final render and this would be something I would want to eventually change. Due to my robot animation lasting longer then the shot video, I simply froze the last frame of the video and extending this to the desired length. The last problem I ran into was when I first layered the two videos; the rendered robot was set to 30fps, where as, the video shot was 25fps. Luckily however, this didn't mean I had to re-render, I just went into the setting and changed the frame rate to 25 fps.
