Robot - 3D Modelling

Updated: Jun 19, 2019

For this project we started by modelling a robot in maya which we could then animate into a video.

I original idea was something like this:

However once I started editing I didn't like the way it was turning out and how it looked so I ended up changing my idea.

For the head I wanted it to have very minimal movement by only rotating side-to-side. Due to this I decided to make the head flat on the bottom and very curved on top. For the eyes I kept my original design and model as I liked how they looked on the head and I thought it would be fun to animate.

Following the shape and design of the head, I made the body round and stocky and made holes in the sides for arms and legs.

I was quite stuck on the legs and arms as I couldn't find a design that fit well with the model so far, however, after looking at some references I made some which went well.

The made up of many circler shapes which will rotate to animate the arm; I also used this technique for the hip.

For the hands I made a claw as this would make it easier to pick up objects and I kept it quite simple for the feet.

After all of this I put the different parts together, adding a neck and any other smaller details such as the buttons on the front, then I was done modelling my robot.

I am pleased with how my robot model turned out and am happy I chose to restart. If I were to model my robot again I would change the arms as I feel they are very long compared to the rest of the body.
