Lesson 5-8 - Skateboard

Updated: Jun 8, 2019

For our blue-print project I chose to model a skate board so that I could experiment with curves in Maya. I started by finding a blue-print for a skate board online for me to model off of and uploaded them onto photoshop to scale and separate. Once i had lined up and scales the blue-prints, I imported them into Maya so that I could start modelling.

I first got a cylinder object and ,by curving the edges and indenting the center, I had made a wheel. I then duplicated this wheel and moved it across to the opposite side and from there built the trucks. I found modelling the trucks the hardest to do in Maya because at the time I hadn't known how to make the complex shape while also making it look smooth and curved. I managed to make a shape I was happy with by getting a cylinder and extruding some faces out of the top to create a prism type shape.

For the deck of the skateboard i began with a cube and, following the blueprints, I scaled it to fit the length, height and width of the board. I was stuck on how to match the curvature of the deck but using what I already knew in Maya I simply added edge loops and raised either end of the cuboid. For the curved ends I beveled either verities on the ends and, again following the blueprints, moved points around to create a curve I was happy with. To save me time replicating it for the other end I cut the board in half along the width of the entire board so that once I added final details i could mirror the model so it's symmetrical. Some of the smaller touches I added was rising the middle and edges of the board slightly, creating bolts and placing them on key points around the skateboard like the wheels and trucks all to make the board look more realistic and accurate. Once I was done I mirrored the board and fused any gaps.

I was planning to texture my skateboard, which I had nearly finished, when I had an issue finding a suitable texture for the grip tape and putting the design I wanted onto the deck of the skateboard. At this time I had also had issues with saving which ended up in me losing my work on substance painter. However, I do plan on coming back to this project and texturing my model.

Overall, I am very happy with how my skateboard turned out as it's distinguishable and was my first finished model in which I experimented with unique curvature. If i was to change this model I would add more detail to the underneath of the board and I would redo the trucks by soft selecting faces on a cylinder to create the curved style of trucks as shown in the blueprints.
