Lego Harry Potter is an immersive 3D game that can be enjoyed through single player and multiplayer and is available on a range of platforms such as Playstations 3 & 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS & Switch and Wii.
If you've played any of Lego's video games before this game is no different when it comes to stud collecting and character unlocking, however, where this games stands out from many of lego's games is its amazing attention to detail when it comes to gameplay, storyline and humour. As a fan of the Harry Potter franchise I was already looking forward to play this game but from the moment I started I couldn't put it down, I was entranced as I could play through 160 iconic characters in the series like Harry, Ron and Hermione, use a range of famous spells and explore beloved locations from the movies.
You play your way through defining moments of movies 1-4, blasting blocks to collect coloured studs which you can use to buy power-ups and unlocked characters but the Lego Harry Potter game enforces a new weapons system. Spells. This is something that hadn't been seen before in any other Lego game at the time, letting players use a variety of famous spells with a specific uses; some examples being Wingardium Leviosa which lifts objects and players and assembles items, Lumos lights up the end of the players wand, scaring away attacking plants and so on. I found this quite enjoyable as one had to go to a lesson to get taught the spells which helped you as you got further through the years.
Another aspect which I loved was the cut scenes between gameplay in which it showed crucial parts of the movie in a light-hearted, humours way. One of my favourite being one of the very first cut scenes we see in which Harry Potter, who was living with his aunt and uncle in Privet Drive, receives a flood of application letters from Hogwarts. A scene which is so iconic for many people recreated in a unique, hilarious way.
As you play through this game you are greeted with amazing scenery and locations in which the play is free to explore. The attention to detail is really which brings it all together; from moving portraits to iconic settings inside and out of Hogwarts, with every location being filled with interactive aspects and some even holding hidden achievements and rooms.
Even once I finished the chapters I was thrilled that I was able to explore the game further by going back and trying to complete the side objectives of unlocking all 160 playable characters, finding house crests, students in peril, red bricks and collecting enough gold brings (200) to unlock a hidden mission. This game has amazing replay-ability and becomes a completely different game when you play multiplayer. It overcomes the challenge of players fighting over the screen, resulting in the other player being completely out of the cameras view, by using the same split-screen method which was seen in the Lego Indiana Jones 2 game.
To me, and many of its fans, Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 stands out as one of the best games Lego has produced, with its fresh new ideas and game play, theres no wonder why it's such a big success. Although there are the odd bug or two within the game, it's smooth to follow for any age and will stand as one of my favourites.
